About The Puttin PHore Poots Golf Tournament
Who is Poots and Why are We Puttin’?
‘Poots’ is our daughter, sister and friend Chelsea. The origin of her nickname has been hotly debated for decades. We can all agree however, that like most nicknames in our family, “Poots Magoots” was just one of many gibberish nicknames given to kids of all ages. Regardless of the origin, the name stuck, often shortened to “poo poo” or just “poots”.
But this story isn’t about Chelsea’s nickname. It’s about a golf tournament in her honor. In 2011, Chelsea was diagnosed with Pulmonary Hypertension, a complex and often misdiagnosed disease. Put simply, PH is high blood pressure in the lungs, causing blood vessels to become stiff, damaged or narrow, and the right side of the heart must work harder to pump blood through. There are treatments, but no cure.
Her diagnosis rocked our family, but we were blessed with great doctors, great insurance, and fairly early detection. Chelsea is currently living with the disease, faring much better than most without her advantages. Often this disease can go undetected or misdiagnosed for life.
So it was in that spirit that we started the Puttin PHore Poots Golf Tournament, as a way to raise money and (more importantly) awareness for this insidious disease, to help provide a fighting chance for those who need it.
Our golf tournament and subsequent awards ceremony is now in it’s eleventh year, raising in excess of 200 thousand dollars and providing our Minnesota community with the information and awareness to drive new research for cures and expanded treatments for those living with PH.
We’re proud to continue this tradition year in and year out, and even more thankful for those who donate their time, money and love each year.
